The story

The copper-colored stones outside give off little warmth and the cold creeps under the jacket. Xia stands on the ladder rung, fingers in her pockets, and waits for the focus to become clear again. The red light of the console reflects off the metal wall of the dome. Every movement of the telescope sounds through the empty space like a slow sigh. She nods to the camera briefly and smiles barely noticeably.

Who she is

Xia is 29 years old and studied astronomy in Shanghai. She spends the summer in the desert to collect data for an international project. At night she works alone in the open dome, during the day she sleeps in the container house next door. The shoot takes place because she still has some time for a few shots after a long night.

Her world

Your dome is reminiscent of the structures at the Very Large Telescope in the Chilean Atacama Desert: austere concrete on the outside, a massive steel structure surrounding an 8.2-meter mirror on the inside[2][8].
You work on a high plateau in one of the driest regions on Earth, so dry that the Residencia was built as an artificial oasis with a pool and tropical garden, so that astronomers can finally breathe after the night is done[3][4][5].
Outside, there is only dust and rock; inside, four floors containing rooms, a restaurant, a library, and even a cinema for the staff, much like the Residencia complex with its 108 rooms designed solely for temporary star-workers[3][4][5].

Primary mirror: The large main mirror of a telescope that collects light from the stars and directs it toward further optics.
