Nora

The Burlesque Singer

Nora sings and dances at night in a dilapidated theater that hardly sees any visitors anymore.

Nora · The Burlesque Singer

The story

Nora sits with legs spread on the edge of the old stage. The spotlight illuminates her open corsage and the black lace fabric beneath. She slowly strokes the seam of her stocking with her gloved hand, up to her knee. Her red mouth remains closed as she holds her gaze upwards into the camera. The fabric of the corset glitters where the light hits the seams. Outside in the hall, the old chairs creak softly, as if someone were coming.

The setting

Large interior with wide wooden stage, torn velvet curtains on the left and right, and dusty rows of seats that disappear into the darkness.

Who she is

The Burlesque Singer

Nora works in an old theater that has stood nearly empty for years. By day she cleans the chairs, and in the evening she rehearses her routines on the empty stage. A friend with a camera wanted to use the old scenery and asked if she would pose in front of the lens. She agreed because the light there is raw and beautiful. The thought of someone watching as she slowly undresses excites her.

Her world

  1. Historical theater seats made of wood and fabric develop a thick layer of dust and a musty scent over time when they receive little cleaning or use[4].
  2. When restoring old cinema seats, dust is usually removed with mild cleaner, warm water and upholstery shampoo such as foaming wax products so the fabric stays soft yet regains its sheen[4].
  3. Burlesque has experienced a clear renaissance in Europe since the 2000s. Festivals such as the Helsinki Burlesque Festival draw over fifteen hundred visitors into small halls while remaining deliberately intimate[3].
