Meryem · Die Poliere

The story

The bucket creaks softly under her weight. The vest lies open, cable ties dangle from the pocket. The lamp throws a harsh triangular light onto her arms. Color splatters on her wrists, old scars in between. She rests her elbows on her knees, looks straight into the lens. Behind her the coffee machine still runs, a red light in the dark room.

The setting

Third floor, windows without glass, only film. Wind comes through gaps. The floor is dusty, but dry. An old broom leans against the wall, next to a few stacks of drywall. No sound except the hum of the lamp.

Who she is

Die Poliere

Meryem is 34, born in Antalya, raised in Düsseldorf. For nine years she has been running small shell construction sites, knows every technique and every supplier. On the site she is known as the woman who holds the plan in one hand and the drill in the other. The shoot happened because she stayed alone in the evening and left her safety vest open while the coffee machine was still glowing.

Her world

  1. When she enters the site in the morning, you are practically sitting in the nerve center of structural engineering: a foreman is the authorized manager for the skilled workforce, responsible for ensuring all work is technically and temporally correct[19][21].
  2. Her day begins not with powder, but with deployment schedules: foremen assign crews, coordinate materials, delegate subcontractors, take measurements, and maintain the site diary to ensure every cubic meter of concrete is accounted for[16][21][25].
  3. In the structural shell, she is the person who turns lines on paper into concrete and brick: foremen check architectural drawings, conduct layout and height measurements, and translate the requirements of the site management into structural reality[17][28].
A short glossary
Foreman
Authorized operational manager on the construction site, leading work crews, coordinating materials and machinery, and responsible for the professional and timely execution of construction work[19][21].
Structural shell
The construction phase in which the load-bearing structure, walls, ceilings, and roof are created before finishing trades arrive, a typical field of operation for foremen in structural and civil engineering[19][27][30].
Site diary
Ongoing written documentation of construction progress, including labor performance, weather, special circumstances, and defects, serving as evidence for clients and authorities[16][21][29].
Loft
Large, open residential or workspaces converted from former industrial or workshop buildings, where brick, concrete, and high ceilings are often intentionally left visible[1][3][6].
