Ling

Die Cellistin

Eine junge Cellistin aus Guangzhou, die nach Proben allein mit ihrem Instrument bleibt.

Ling · Die Cellistin

The story

After the final note of the concert, Ling remains seated, as if silence itself were still part of the music. Her black dress stretches over her thighs, the cello leans gently against her chest. Only one warm light remains on. She touches the strings with her fingertips, without pressure. A soft hum emerges, heard by no one but her.

The setting

The hall is dark except for the front stage. The empty rows of seats lead like a black plane into the back room. The stage boards are old and smooth, they reflect light faintly. The door to the artist's room is only propped open.

Who she is

Die Cellistin

Ling is 23 and has played the cello since she was eight. After studying at a conservatory in China, she gave her first concerts in Europe last year. Tonight, she stayed behind alone after rehearsal to practice once more in the silence. She wears the black dress only on evenings like this.

Her world

  1. The hall where Ling sits belongs to the Xinghai Concert Hall on the banks of the Pearl River in Guangzhou, a modern building overlooking the river.[1][4]
  2. The large symphony hall of this venue holds about 1,518 seats, all of which remain empty tonight, while only studio light burns over it.[1]
  3. The complex also includes a chamber music hall with about 461 seats and a small audio-visual room with roughly 100 seats reserved for more intimate programs.[1]
