Isabel · Die Buchhaendlerin

The story

At about 12 o'clock Isabel closes the shop door. Light slants over the shelves, painting bright stripes on the floor. She still wears her old knitted sweater and jeans with faded knees. The boxes are already ready because she wanted to sort the books. She lifts the sweater, slides it under her arms, lets the jeans glide. Her skin absorbs the window light, without adding anything. Outside footsteps pass by, inside only the quiet crackle of paper remains.

The setting

Narrow corridor between two tall shelves, a window in the right hand, a row of boxes in the left hand. The wood smells of dust and glue, the light is warm and unfiltered.

Who she is

Die Buchhaendlerin

Isabel is 35, born in Guatemala City, and has owned a small antiquarian bookshop on a side street for ten years. She always wears an old sweater of her father's and jeans she shortens herself. When the shop is empty at midday, she takes time for a quiet shoot among the shelves. You are here because she drew you into conversation yesterday while you were leafing through an old edition of García Márquez.

Her world

  1. In Zone 1 of Guatemala City, small, slightly dim bookshops like Librería El Búho crowd together, their shelves stacking old texts, first editions, magazines, comics, vinyl records, and even old cameras.[4][2]
  2. El Búho is located at the corner of 9a Calle and 10a Avenida and opens on weekdays in two shifts, mornings and early evenings, so Isabel has learned to waste her lunch break between exactly such addresses.[4]
  3. Around the Parque Central, the city together with booksellers regularly organizes open-air book fairs, where stalls with used novels, schoolbooks, and yellowed magazines fill entire squares.[4]
