Bianca · Die Sound-Designerin

The story

Bianca leans back against the glass. The jacket hangs only over her right shoulder. Under the night lights her skin glows matte. She breathes shallowly. Every movement pushes the cold against her collarbone.

The setting

High‑rise balcony, three meters deep, at night, violet light from below, glass glistens slightly, distant sirens seep in with the wind.

Who she is

Die Sound-Designerin

Bianca is a sound designer who mixes electro in a small studio on the 18th floor. The street below serves as her second microphone. It is post-gig night, the jacket falls, breasts bare, and the cool air presses her voice even more clearly against the recorder.

Her world

  1. From a balcony even an apparently quiet night can be broken into vibrating sound textures, as urban field recordings of train lines in the wind have shown[1].
  2. In São Paulo dance floors in many clubs only fill after one in the morning, large venues often keep the music running into late morning, and the city hardly knows an official closing time[3].
  3. Vila Madalena counts as a hub of night culture in São Paulo, with bars and small venues from which spontaneous street parties with samba, funk or electronic music emerge[3].
A short glossary
Field Recording
Recording of sounds outside a studio, for example on balconies or streets, to integrate authentic ambient atmospheres into sound design and music[1][5].
MS-Stereo
Recording technique using a middle and a side microphone, often with Sennheiser MKH30 and MKH50, that generates a flexible stereo image from only two channels[5].
Handheld Recorder
Compact audio recorder with built-in microphones, such as Sony A10 or Zoom H6, ideal for spontaneous recordings of street and club sounds on the go[5][6].
Windschutz
Special cover or basket around microphones that reduces wind noise and thus ensures clean outdoor recordings on balconies and in street canyons[6].
